Several ways to prevent rats in your home

1. Close the door. If you get into the habit of leaving the door wide open, a rat might sneak in when you’re not looking. Closing the door will keep the rats out. Rats are more active at night, so it’s better not to leave the gate open overnight. If you like to leave your door open in the summer to allow breezes to blow in, install screen doors to keep rats out.

2. Close the Windows. Rats are good at crawling and can enter houses without difficulty through Windows, especially those on the second floor. Always keep Windows closed or install netting. If you haven’t checked the window screens in a while, go around the room and check them one by one. Window screens are easily damaged after a while, and small holes or cracks in the mesh with rust can allow rats to enter. If some Windows cannot be closed, or there is a gap between the window and the frame, the gap can be blocked by steel wool or wire mesh.

3. Check the bottom of the room. Another possible place for rats to enter a house is cracks in walls, especially near Windows and entryways. Walk around the outside of the house and check for cracks or holes in the walls that could allow rats to get inside. Plug any holes you find that are larger than 6.4mm. It is better to use a strong repair material, such as sheet metal, wire mesh, or concrete mortar. Otherwise, the rat may be able to quickly chew through the weaker material and re-enter your house.

4. Block the cable outlet, drain, vent, and chimney. If the cable outlet is large enough for rats to pass through, they can easily follow the cable into the house. They can also enter houses through access holes for water pipes and drains, or climb into ventilation holes and chimneys. Plug the stainless steel velvet into the small holes around the pipes and cables, then plug the holes with caulking material. The steel wool forms a rough, rubbing barrier that keeps rats out, and you can easily cut it with scissors to fit into smaller Spaces. Install mesh to prevent rats from getting into pipes, vents, and chimneys.
